Weight enforcement references

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York is protected by Weigh In Motion from Kistler for direct weight enforcement.
Brooklyn Queens Expressway (US)

In New York city the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) with a triple-cantilever design is facing tremendous challenges due to overloaded vehicles. Kistler's Weigh In Motion systems were deployed to help identify overloaded vehicles automatically. Recently Kistler’s WIM systems were certified and put into operation as the first automated citation system in the country and as a result overloading is diminishing. The collected data is also used to calculate the bridge's life span and to perform accurate traffic load analysis. “The collaboration with Kistler and C2SMART was key to bringing this first-in-the-nation automated direct enforcement system to life,” said Tanvi Pandya, P.E. DBIA, executive director, BQE Design Build & Emergency Contracts.

Data collection and research references

Erftstadt, A1 Highway (Germany)

The Institute of Highway Engineering at Germany’s RWTH Aachen University chose our KiTraffic Digital Weigh In Motion system for their pioneering “Digital Twin Road” research project. In 2023, 10 Lineas Digital sensors were integrated seamlessly into Germany’s busy A1 highway – with no need for special road preparation or repaving. A special sensor layout was designed exclusively for this project, highlighting our commitment to offering flexible layout options and meeting customers’ needs.

Bridge protection references

Weigh In Motion for bridges: El Carrizo (227 m), equipped with Kistler WIM, is the second highest bridge in North America.
El Carrizo Bridge (Mexico)

The El Carrizo highway bridge in Mexico, the second highest bridge in North America, faced a significant traffic accident in 2018, leading to its closure. To enhance its safety two Weigh In Motion (WIM) checkpoints were installed using Kistler technology. The WIM system, consisting of accurate Lineas WIM sensors, measures automatically axle loads and total vehicle weights of passing vehicles. The WIM solution provided by Kistler ensures optimal compliance with weight restrictions and improves the overall bridge safety.
