Indicating in the Development Departments: Calibration, Thermodynamics and Mechanics
The KiBox supplies users with information on combustion, injection valve and ignition control – for example, to optimize engine mapping with the ECU calibration system. Data can then be processed and visualized, e.g. in the usual INCA environment.
On engine test benches, the KiBox assists e.g. with thermodynamic research, basic parameterization of the engine control, and with the calibration of knock control or knock detection. When used as a monitoring system, it detects violations of limiting values, notifies them to the automation system and stores the relevant raw data with a history of events preceding and following.
Onboard System for Mobile Operation
Compact design, modular vehicle accessories and sensor connections on the front make the KiBox ideal for mobile use. All the measurement parameters can be configured on the clearly structured intuitive user interface.
The KiBox supports sensors with automatic sensor identification (PiezoSmart). Signals are parameterized automatically with the help of an electronic datasheet (TEDS); the sensor runtime is recorded and stored for diagnosis.
CrankSmart for Optimum Data Quality
The challenge: to optimize the quality of measurement data for vehicle indication in transient engine mode which is characterized by strong torsional vibrations. The response: The experts from Kistler and the FKFS (Forschungsinstitut für Kraftfahrwesen und Fahrzeugmotoren Stuttgart) () joined to develop an innovative, time-saving process: CrankSmart − in this way, the KiBox from Kistler is able to operate with the vehicle's own crank angle sensor.
Flexible Interfaces for Compatibility
Measurements and evaluations with the KiBox are easy to configure, so they can quickly be adapted to individual requirements. A universal test bench interface means that the KiBox can be integrated into commonly used automation systems such as Morphee, Puma and Stars.
The KiBox supports virtual channels, therefore the number of available channels is large. Multiplexed ignition or injection signals from several cylinders can now be connected to a single current probe input, so ignition or injection timing calculations can be performed for all cylinders.
With the need of additional physical channels two KiBox systems can be cascaded* to double the channel amount. Both devices are handled by the software as one system.

User specific calculations
By means of the user formula individual real-time calculations can be easily implemented. Therefore the software provides a program code editor (for Matlab syntax related source code). An import/export function offers an easy sharing with colleagues. In the download area some examples and valuable extended calculations can be downloaded.
This service is for free and will be updated continuously. Within the scope of our KiBox services we will support you by developing your own algorithms or program codes for combustion analysis if required. Therefore, please contact your local representative at Kistler.
KID3 (Knock Intensity Detection)
KID is an established Bosch methodology for calibrating the knock protection function implemented in engine control units. Knock control in production vehicles is based on structure-borne signals detected by up to four knock sensors mounted on the engine block. To calibrate the knock application, the individual pressure signals are filtered and analysed, producing the required knock metrics for comparison with the structure bourne signals and the measurement labels provided by the ECU. KID3 is the most recent evolutionary stage of this methodology and enables the calibration of the latest generation of engine control units with model-based knock detection methods.
XCP is a standardized and independent software interface for continuous data transfer between the cockpit software and other systems.
The interface enables the cross-system and time-synchronized recording of measurement data and parameters.
