What does 'outgassing' mean?
Outgassing is the release of gas from solid or liquid material. It can occur as the result of various influences, such as pressure release, increase in temperature and other processes. Nearly all materials outgas in a vacuum, in particular materials such as plastics, elastomers and adhesives; porous ceramics and porous metals; lubricating greases, sealing greases and heat-conducting greases. The most common outgassed gases and vapors include water vapor; oil and grease vapors; solvents and volatile organic compounds; and, in the area of ultra-high vacuum pressure, hydrogen and carbon monoxide from stainless steel.
