Degree of protection class

Protection of electrical equipment by suitable enclosures, covers etc. according to EN60529. The protection class is stated by IP (International Protection) followed by two digits. The first digit stands for protection against touching and the ingress of solid bodies, the second for the degree of protection against the ingress of water.

Example: IP65 indicates a complete protection against touching, as well as against the ingress of dust and spray water from all directions.
