Force Measurement in Automotive Research

Over recent years, there has been a big increase in passive safety requirements. Indeed, passive safety is now one of the three main criteria applied in vehicle purchasing decisions. The main aim of passive safety is to ensure that, in the event of an accident, the consequences for the occupants of the vehicle are kept to a minimum.

This trend has led to a growing demand for simulations and development studies to make certain that future vehicles satisfy market requirements in terms of safety. Kistler measuring systems make a crucial contribution to recording forces in vehicle testing. Kistler can provide the right sensor and measuring chain for every application and has the experienced engineers needed to adapt it to the customer's requirements.

Applications
Kistler supplies 1-component/3-component and torque sensors for many different applications in the automotive industry. Examples include crash barriers and instrument-equipped panels for mobile crash cars, impact force measurement platforms for aircraft undercarriage development, wind tunnel testing of vehicles, drop towers and acceleration slides for component testing, brake shoe measuring plates for trains and trams, etc. Kistler provides its customers with individual measurement solutions for data recording in the automotive industry.
SmartCrash barrier

SmartCrash barriers
Kistler has worked for many years on dynamic crash measurement in experimental developments and in the domain of passive safety and is today the market leader for crash barriers. The latest generation of SmartCrash barriers (Typ 9655A...) represents the state of the art in this field: 3-component force measurement; integrated data recording, storage and digitalisation in each individual force measurement element; a connection cable for each SmartCrash segment, with up to 100 individual force measurement elements; SmartCrash barriers made up from a number of SmartCrash segments. Piezoelectric measurement technology is the perfect tool for dynamic measurement in crash testing and the latest generation of SmartCrash barriers is being used successfully by major automobile manufacturers.

The MICRODAU design contains 16 MB flash storage for local data storage for each 3-channel DAQ module. The storage capacity is sufficient for data recorded at a sampling rate of 20 kHz over a period of up to 150 seconds. Combined with local data storage, the USB bus provides synchronized data recording on all channels without needing large bandwidth for data transmission. Thanks to electrical reinforcement, three measuring domains (e.g. 5%, 20% and 100% of the full range) can be switched at the charge amplifier. This means that, in combination with the high linearity of the quartz sensors, the measuring range is increased by several powers of ten.

All of Kistler's crash standards and special solutions provide for easy handling. Depending on the customer's particular requirements, the SmartCrash barriers can be segmented and produced in various sizes. Front-end fixing of the whole SmartCrash barrier permits faster and easier changes between the individual crash standards (e.g. EuroNCAP, US NCAP, J NCAP, TRL and AZT).
