Thermal Analysis

Physical effects like heat conduction, heat transfer and heat radiation can be simulated using FEM. A sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis can be applied to highly stressed engine components, for example.

Firstly, the temperature field is determined via thermal analysis. The stress/deformation response to the temperature field is found through a subsequent mechanical analysis. In this context constraints have an important effect on the resulting component stress.

Examples of this kind of sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis are:

• Investigation of the stress-deformation behaviour of exhaust-gas systems

• Prestressing losses in clamping and interference fit assemblies due to temperature changes
