Wheel Force Measurement

The dynamic measurement of force and torque plays a central role in vehicle development and this has long been one of Kistler's core competences. Automobile manufacturers seek to ensure that every vehicle comes with good ride characteristics specific to the model and a maximum of active safety. To this end, the tires and other factors influencing ride need to be adapted to the relevant model on the test stand and in road trials. As the tires are the single point of contact between the vehicle and the road, knowledge of the forces and torques they transmit is vitally important. The same applies to their dynamic behaviour and the effect of modifications of the suspension.

Kistler measuring wheels and hubs are the ideal instrument for measuring force and torque on the wheel. They are available for every type of application and for nearly every vehicle. For example, DMS measuring wheels are available for static and endurance measurements while piezoelectric measurement technology is used for highly dynamic processes. A whole range of Kistler wheel force measuring systems is available to record the behaviour both of the vehicle as a whole and its individual components, whether on the test stand or out on the road.

RoaDyn measuring wheels and technologies

RoaDyn wheel force measuring systems are a powerful tool for measuring the forces and torques appearing on the wheel at any speed. They offer maximum precision over a wide frequency range.

Measuring wheels typically come in 6-component form for measuring longitudinal, lateral and vertical forces (Fx, Fy, Fz) and for tilt, traction and steering torque (Mx, My, Mz). Kistler also offers 1 component rotating wheel systems for traction torque (My) only.

Measuring hubs can be used to record up to six components but, as traction torque can be supported only by a freely rotating system, only the Fx, Fy and Fz forces and the torques Mx and Mz are measured. Where necessary, the My component can be retrofitted.

The RoaDyn systems are available in every size for a whole range of applications. For example, in the laboratory, the weight and compactness of sensors are less important than durability, reliability and precision. On the road, however, the requirements with regard to mass and inertia are completely different. A large additional mass like that of a measuring hub would lead to unrealistic driving conditions. At the same time, in order to satisfy the latest safety criteria, measuring wheels must possess sufficient overload capacity to withstand extreme environmental conditions.

Kistler offers measuring wheels with a variety of characteristics to meet different types of requirements ranging from Formula 1 to standard production cars, heavy goods vehicles, military vehicles, contractors' vehicles, etc. Our special light-weight RoaDyn®wheels are made from carbon-fibre composites and aluminium.
Our  "System 2000“ has revolutionised R&D work, thanks to an ultra-modern system in which the data is recorded at the wheel in digital form.

In addition, Kistler offers RoaDyn data processing software which runs on Windows 2000/ XP® and supports online display and hard disk recording.
